Bringing Colour and Joy to Francis House Hospice: A Giant Corridor Mural in Didsbury
A small section of the rainbow-bug mural
I’m so proud to share this latest project.
I was invited to Francis House Children’s Hospice in Didsbury to transform their bedroom corridor - which was previously plain magnolia - into a space filled with colour and joy.
The Design Process
The team wanted a design that would align with their existing brand and logo, but also bring a sense of vibrancy without being "too full-on" for the children. We landed on a sweeping rainbow theme, punctuated by some friendly, chirpy bugs.
The inspiration actually came from a previous bug mural I’d painted for private clients, Anna and Johnny. It’s always wonderful when one project leads to another!
Painting on a Large Scale
The corridor was enormously long, which was a fun logistical challenge! Once the drawing was mapped out, the painting flowed quickly. I’ll admit, there were a few ‘deliberate’ continuity errors along the way, but they were all part of the charm. 😁
I should also note that the entire rainbow was painted by hand. While I used masking tape for those tricky, teeny sections above the doors, everything else was done freehand - a detail I think really keeps the energy of the mural alive.
Working in Harmony
The hospice was temporarily closed for refurbishments, which meant I was working alongside a whole team of other tradespeople. It was a fantastic experience - I really enjoyed the company, the banter, and the radio tunes! The staff at Francis House were also incredibly kind, making me feel like "part of the furniture" by the end of the week (and keeping me well-fed with delicious lunches!).
A huge thank you to the team at Francis House for inviting me into their space. It was a true privilege to contribute to such a special environment. 🌈 🐞
Video walk through to show the overall length of the mural!
Are you looking to transform a commercial space?
This project reminded me how much I enjoy working on large-scale commercial commissions. Whether it's a hospice, a school, or a corporate office, I have the experience to work efficiently alongside other tradespeople to bring your wall-vision to life.
